The Woman in the Ancient Market

Seeing the artistic work taking place in the neighborhood of El Punto inspired me to be part of it and to contribute with my art to the effort that we, as Dominicans, have made to support Salem’s social and economic development. Having lived here for over eight years, I feel excited and proud to share my art with my community. In this piece, I draw a comparison between two eras: the colonial period and the 1980s, when Dominican immigrant women arrived in Salem to join the city’s workforce and contribute to its growth. The artwork also reflects on how ships once transported goods exchanged with the Caribbean from Salem, revealing a historical continuity of trade and adaptation.
