MURAL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Mural Ambassador Program is a six-week cohort that empowers residents to lead guided tours highlighting the murals and deep cultural legacy of The Point “El Punto” neighborhood. Facilitated by Amanda Beard Garcia and Yolanda Fauvet, bilingual (Spanish and English) Thursday evening workshops will be held from February 29 – April 4.
Participants as local experts will discuss Salem’s history, identify and critique visual art, and share their stories to co-design a walking experience that amplifies residents’ voices, engenders pride, and bridges communities. Participants who successfully complete the program will have paid opportunities to lead educational tours for PUAM beginning in Spring 2024.
MEET THE FACILITATORS
Amanda Beard Garcia is a Chinese American muralist, painter, and brand designer. She was born and raised in Beverly, MA and holds a BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Amanda is co-founder and principal of Likemind Design in Dracut, MA, a custom mural and design studio with a mission to elevate the brands of independently-owned businesses “just like us.” She has been a participant of many local public art initiatives and has designed custom artwork and brand identities for small businesses all over Greater Boston.
In addition to PUAM, Amanda has been a visiting artist and educator at Montserrat College of Art, Endicott College, Beverly High School, and Raw Art Works. In 2023, Amanda worked with a group of AP Studio Art and advanced art junior and senior students to co-design and install a hand-painted mural at Beverly High School with support in part by a Mass Cultural Council STARS Residency grant and Beverly Cultural Council grant. In 2022, Amanda was an artist-in-residence with Residence Lab (ResLab), an innovative program by Pao Arts Center and the Asian Community Development Corporation that empowered residents and artists to collectively preserve Chinatown through creative activation of underutilized sites in the neighborhood.
When she’s not creating, you can usually find her at rock concerts, home-improving, and being trailed by her pets Pica and Mei-Mei.
Yolanda Fauvet is a Mexican American translator with a background in visual arts. She was born and raised in Colorado and also calls Michoacán and Massachusetts home. She holds degrees in religious studies and sculpture from the University of Colorado and completed the literary translation program at the Universidad Autónoma de México in 2019.
Yolanda is co-founder of Lateral, an intimate team of translators working in English and Spanish with a repertoire that spans humanities and the arts, including articles for Glasstire, exhibition texts, and social justice projects for the Othering & Belonging Institute. She is also a founding member of Falsos Amigos, a collective dedicated to literary and collaborative translation based in Mexico City. They’re currently working with Editorial Almadía to publish the Spanish version of Lisa Yaszek’s anthology The Future is Female! 25 Classic Science Fiction Stories by Women, from Pulp Pioneers to Ursula K. Le Guin, presented in three volumes: Mundos alternos (2022), Retro futurismos (2023), and Futuros distópicos (2024).
In addition to codeveloping the mural ambassador program at PUAM, Yolanda is curating an exhibition at Museo de las Americas that will open in August 2024. Her professional experience also includes guest services at the Clyfford Still Museum and bilingual tours for AtravésArte and the Denver Art Museum. She worked in book preservation at Norlin Library for two years, and then another two years as circulation clerk at the Denver Public Library, where she also served on the Services to New Immigrants committee and developed a neighborhood-focused art program called Connecting Vecinos.
Among her hobbies are obsessively creating playlists, taking photos with her phone, and sending handmade cards in the mail.
DESCRIPCIÓN DEL PROGRAMA
El Programa de embajadores murales es una cohorte de seis semanas que empodera a los residentes para conducir recorridos guiados que resalten los murales y el profundo legado cultural del barrio El Punto o “The Point”. Las facilitadoras de este proyecto, Yolanda Fauvet y Amanda Beard Garcia, impartirán talleres bilingües (inglés y español) los jueves por la tarde del 29 de febrero al 4 de abril.
Los participantes, como expertos locales, conversarán sobre la historia de Salem, identificarán y criticarán arte visual y compartirán sus historias para diseñar juntos una caminata que amplifique las voces de los residentes, genere orgullo y tienda puentes entre comunidades. Los participantes que completen el programa con éxito tendrán oportunidades remuneradas para encabezar recorridos educativos para el Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) que comenzarán en la primavera del 2024.
ACERCA DE LAS FACILITADORAS
Yolanda Fauvet es una traductora mexicanoestadounidense con formación en artes visuales. Nació y creció en Colorado, pero también considera a Michoacán y Massachusetts su hogar. Tiene grados académicos en estudios de las religiones y escultura de la University of Colorado y realizó el Diplomado en Formación de Traductores Literarios en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México en el 2019.
Yolanda es cofundadora de Lateral, un equipo íntimo de traductoras de inglés y español cuyo repertorio abarca las artes y humanidades, incluyendo artículos para Glasstire, textos de exposiciones y proyectos de justicia social para el Othering & Belonging Institute. También es integrante fundadora de Falsos Amigos, un colectivo con sede en la Ciudad de México dedicado a la traducción literaria colaborativa. Actualmente están trabajando con Editorial Almadía para publicar la versión en español de la antología de Lisa Yaszek The Future is Female! 25 Classic Science Fiction Stories by Women, from Pulp Pioneers to Ursula K. Le Guin en tres tomos: Mundos alternos (2022), Retrofuturismos (2023) y Futuros distópicos (2024).
Además de codesarrollar el programa de embajadores murales en el PUAM, Yolanda está curando una exposición en el Museo de las Américas que se inaugurará en agosto del 2024. Su experiencia profesional también incluye servicios para visitantes en el Clyfford Still Museum y visitas guiadas bilingües para AtravésArte y en el Denver Art Museum. Trabajó en la preservación de libros en la Norlin Library durante dos años y después otros dos años como encargada de circulación en la Biblioteca Pública de Denver, donde también formó parte del comité de servicios para nuevos inmigrantes y desarrolló un programa de arte enfocado en el vecindario llamado Connecting Vecinos.
Entre sus pasatiempos se encuentran crear obsesivamente listas de reproducción, tomar fotos con su teléfono y enviar tarjetas hechas a mano por correo.

Cuando no está creando, puedes encontrarla usualmente en conciertos de rock, haciendo mejoras en su hogar y siendo seguida por sus mascotas Pica y Mei-Mei.
