ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Through public art, PUAM aims to increase pride of place within the neighborhood and raise consciousness about social justice topics. PUAM’s 2023 Call for Art is inspired by an award-winning Mexican-American author, Reyna Grande. The Call is inspired by the title of the book A Dream Called Home. Reyna’s memoir is about the courage to fulfill the deep desire to have a stable home, a dream she realized by daring to pursue it. By deriving inspiration from Reyna’s memoir, PUAM is providing an opportunity and platform for creatives to share their stories that will reflect and/or connect with the life/home that communities of color continue to pursue in this country.
The 2023 National Grid Call for Art invites New England-based artists to apply for a paid opportunity to paint an 8’x8’ mural using the theme “A Dream Called Home”. We will ask artists and residents to visually explore what makes or challenges the ideals of the place they call home. Participants can draw upon their own experiences or draw inspiration from quotes from Grande’s memoir. The twenty-seven (27) murals will be curated as such:
- Fourteen (14) murals will be dedicated to New England-based artists
- Six (6) murals will be dedicated to Salem El Punto residents and neighbors selected to participate in the Creative Neighbor Program who will receive coaching to create their own mural from concept to installation
- Seven (7) educational panels will be dedicated to select quotes that reflect the spirit of the call appearing in both Spanish and English.
This call invites New England-based artists to create a mural that is a visual combination of art and educational content which engenders an impactful experience for each contributing artist, El Punto community, and all visitors of our open-air museum.
ABOUT REYNA GRANDE
Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a young girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Awards finalist. Her other books include the novels A Ballad of Love and Glory, Across a Hundred Mountains, and Dancing with Butterflies, the memoirs The Distance Between Us: Young Readers Edition, and A Dream Called Home. She is the co-editor of the anthology Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings. She lives in Woodland, California, with her husband and two children. ABOUT PUAM
The Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) is a mission-driven public art program created by North Shore CDC, a community development non-profit organization founded in Salem, MA in 1978 in the Point neighborhood. The Museum was created to break down the invisible but undeniable socio-economic barrier between the Point and the rest of the city and region. Through stunning world-class art, we wish to improve pride within the neighborhood. What sets PUAM apart is that nearly all of the public art in our program is painted on or adjacent to long-term restricted affordable housing. These homes will remain affordable to generations of families forever.
ABOUT NSCDC
North Shore Community Development Coalition’s mission is to invest in neighborhoods to create thriving communities. Founded in 1978, NSCDC is based in Salem’s Point neighborhood. The Point is our incubator for new projects and programs. It is the place where we have the deepest relationships and the longest history. Many of the programs we offer in Salem serve people from other towns in the Greater Boston/North Shore area. NSCDC seeks to align its real estate investments, programmatic offerings, and advocacy efforts for maximum impact. Its work consists of the following categories:

SOBRE LA EXHIBICIÓN
El Museo de Arte Urbano Punto (PUAM) fue fundado por North Shore CDC en el histórico vecindario El Punto de Salem para ayudar a romper la barrera socioeconómica invisible pero innegable en El Punto, una comunidad principalmente latina, y el resto de Salem. A través del arte público, PUAM tiene como objetivo aumentar el orgullo de este vecindario y crear conciencia sobre temas de justicia social. La convocatoria de arte 2023 de PUAM está inspirada en una autora mexicana-estadounidense galardonada, Reyna Grande. El llamado está inspirado en el título del libro La Busqueda de un Sueño. El libro de Reyna trata sobre el coraje que ella tuvo para cumplir el profundo deseo de tener un hogar estable, un sueño que realizó al atreverse a perseguirlo. Al inspirarse en las memorias del libro de Reyna, PUAM brinda una oportunidad y una plataforma para que las personas compartan sus historias que reflejarán y/o se conectarán con la vida/el hogar que las comunidades de color continúan buscando en este país.
El Llamado de el National Grid del 2023 invita a los artistas de Nueva Inglaterra a participar en una oportunidad pagada para pintar un mural de 8’x8′ con el tema “Un Sueño Llamado Hogar”. Les pediremos a los artistas y vecinos que exploren visualmente qué hace o desafía los ideales del lugar al que llaman hogar. Los participantes pueden basarse en sus propias experiencias o inspirarse en citas de el libro de Reyna Grande. Los veintisiete (27) murales serán designados como tales:
- Se dedicarán catorce (14) murales a artistas de Nueva Inglaterra.
- Se dedicarán seis (6) murales a los vecinos de El Punto seleccionados para participar en el Programa de Vecinos Creativos que recibirán entrenamiento para crear su propio mural desde el principio hasta el final.
- Se dedicarán siete (7) paneles educativos a textos seleccionadas que reflejen el espíritu de la convocatoria, que aparecerán tanto en español como en inglés.
Este Llamado invita a los artistas de Nueva Inglaterra a crear un mural que sea una combinación visual de arte y contenido educativo que genere una experiencia impactante para cada artista contribuyente, la comunidad de El Punto y todos los visitantes de nuestro museo al aire libre.
SOBRE REYNA GRANDE
Reyna Grande es una autora galardonada, presentadora motivante y maestra de escritura. Cuando era niña, cruzó la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México para reunirse con su familia en Los Ángeles, un viaje desgarrador narrado en La distancia entre nosotros, finalista de los Premios del Círculo Nacional de Críticos de Libros. El Museo de Arte Urbano Punto (PUAM) es un programa de arte público impulsado por la misión creada por North Shore CDC, una organización de desarrollo comunitario sin fines de lucro fundada en Salem, MA en 1978 en el barrio de Punto. El Museo se creó para romper la invisible pero innegable barrera socioeconómica entre el Punto y el resto de la ciudad y la región. A través de un arte impresionante de nivel mundial, deseamos mejorar el orgullo dentro del barrio. SOBRE NSCDC
