My design commemorates the wave of Polish immigrants that settled in Salem in the late 1890’s. I chose to focus on music, dance and celebration. The center of the design depicts a dancer representing various traditional dances such as Krakowiak, Mazurka, Oberek, and Polonaise. She is dressed in costume with vibrant colors, lace & embroidery and flowers in her hair. Above her is an accordian, and each corner showcases an instrument used in trad Polish music. Top left is a Hurdy Gurdy, top right a Suka, bottom left a cello and bottom right a violin. The frame is a ribbon pattern, the scallop edging on the circle represents lace, and the flower patterns will be painted to look like embroidery. These particular colors were chosen after researching dance clothing.
