Chavez has extensive experience developing community-based arts project from concept to execution. Here, her piece bursts with life and energy as this young girl swings gleefully against the sun. She loved how the sun hit the side of the building – especially during sunset – and wanted to celebrate this natural beauty through her vibrant use of color. At first glance, the paper airplanes simply add to the playfulness of the piece but they actually hold a deeper purpose for Chavez. “Paper planes, to me, have a lot of meaning because they’re playful but they also have this meaning of travel ‘light’ and moving. As an immigrant I feel very connected to that idea.”
