“This piece is called ¡¿What is our Voz?! It encompasses the thoughts, dreams, the fears and the pursuit of both the colored and immigrant individuals, and hits on aspects of the identity behind females and males of color in America towards their dreams. The mural reflects elements of an exploration of social justice issues undertaken by students participating in the Expanding Horizons summer program offered by LEAP for Education and Salem Public Schools. In the summer of 2021, 10 students and 3 facilitators engaged in meaningful activities and discussions centered around race, power, privilege, and self identity.” Okaje worked with students throughout the session to help them use artistic expression as a way to express views and emotions. Several students directly participated in the painting of the mural.
