This mural was a collaboration between Meg Nichols and Rayon Buchanan, the owner of Ray Adea’s Mediterranean and Jamaican Cuisine, a restaurant located at 90 Lafayette Street in Salem serving delicious allergen friendly foods. Meg writes, “Ray, the team from North Shore CDC and I, had a roundtable brainstorm about the vision for this mural. It was essential to celebrate Jamaica’s cultural vibrancy, which is Ray’s heritage and cuisine specialty. We decided that keeping the design non-food orientated was the way to go, since Ray has visions for the space beyond simply a restaurant, but a community event space, too. The national bird (Doctor Bird) and flower (Hibiscus) are naturally striking and colorful, so I paired those with the map of Jamaica (with a star to mark Ray’s home Parish), which gave it a strong, graphically dynamic background.”
