To me, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” sings of a desire to be free of the systemic racism that makes people anxious and worried and on-guard, that threatens people’s physical wellbeing, that keeps people from being free to pursue joy. My submission envisions a neighborhood party in the Point. It celebrates being free and safe to come together in joy. It’s about the joy of living in this tight-knit city neighborhood, about being free to come together without fear of harassment or threat. And, in this moment of pandemic, it’s about looking forward to a time when people can come together once again without fear of falling ill.
