This year, PUAM is proud to partner with the Salem 400+, Salem Maritime NHS, and Peabody Essex Museum to launch the new Call for Art for 2025. The Call for Art invites New England-based artists to apply for a paid opportunity to paint an 8’ x 8’ mural per the theme RAÍCES | ROOTS ( Soy de aquí |I am from here). We will ask artists and residents to visually explore their roots/raíces or the roots of their family or community. Participants are invited to reflect on their lived experiences and/or reflect on broader cultural narratives around immigration, belonging, identity, and generational legacy.
This theme aligns with Salem’s 400th anniversary celebration, encouraging reflection on the layered histories of place and people. It honors both original inhabitants and those who’ve made Salem home across generations, recognizing migration, resilience, and reinvention as central to our shared story. Like native and transplanted plants that thrive with care, people and cultures also take root, shaping the beauty and well-being of Salem through their stories, homes, labor, and contributions.

CALL FOR NEW ENGLAND-BASED ARTISTS 2025
PUAM will commission twenty (20) 8’ x 8’ murals to be curated as follows:
- Fourteen (14) murals created by selected New England-based artists
- Up to six (6) murals created by Salem-based artists participating in our Creative Neighbor Program, supported through installation by two artist mentors
Artists are also encouraged to apply as mentors for the Creative Neighbor Program participants. This is a unique opportunity to support local artists while contributing to the collective spirit of PUAM.
WHAT IS THE THEME?
RAÍCES | ROOTS celebrates the deep and diverse connections people make to place, community, and culture (specifically to the Point Neighborhood and the City of Salem). This year’s theme invites muralists to explore the literal and metaphorical meanings of “Salem’s roots”:
- The roots we’re born into
The families who’ve lived in Salem for generations, the cultural traditions passed down, and the histories that shape our neighborhoods. - The roots we choose
The journeys that brought people here from around the world, the resilience of immigrant communities, and the new beginnings that continue to define Salem. - The roots we cultivate
The ways we invest in our city, build community across differences, and plant seeds for a more inclusive and vibrant future.
Note: While we recognize that Salem’s witch history is an important part of the city’s identity, this open call invites artists to look beyond that singular narrative. We encourage proposals that explore the roots of Salem’s many communities, especially those that have historically been overlooked and reflect the richness of our city’s cultural stories.
APPLICATION FAQS
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- A written artist statement
- Up to 3 relevant work samples
- A sketch of the proposed mural
- Must live in New England Region (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, or RI)
- Be able to submit an IRS W9 Form
Artists are required to submit a visual proposal or sketch of the mural, along with a written statement describing the inspiration behind their submission, what inspired it, how it came to be, or where the idea originated. The written statement will play a significant role in the judging.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
We’re seeking artists whose work demonstrates:
- A compelling connection to the theme “Raíces | Roots”
- Experience or interest in public art and mural making
We especially encourage applications from artists who have a rooted connection to Salem, Massachusetts.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Anyone 18 years and older may apply. Either solo or in small teams. A preference will be applied to current or former residents of the City of Salem and the North Shore. Legal proof of address is required for New England-based artists. Groups may have members under the age of 18, but written permission to participate in the Call for Art needs to be given by their legal guardian.
Note: Please be advised that applicants needing to travel long distances to Salem are responsible for planning and funding their travel/accommodations during the installation time.
HOW DO ARTISTS APPLY?
Artists can submit an application via this LINK. Or you can visit our open house on Monday, August 18 at Proyectos Punto, 34 Peabody, Salem, MA. On this day, we will provide help filling out the application in person from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM and Via Zoom from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Zoom link
WHAT IS THE AWARD/ ARTIST STIPEND?
A team of judges will select 20 artists who will receive a $1000 stipend for artist fees and supplies. Funds will be distributed in two payments: an initial $500 will be paid upfront when selected, and the remaining $500 will be provided once the mural is completed.
Artists may also select to participate as Mentors. Two selected Mentors will receive an additional $500.
NOTE: Artists are responsible for purchasing and delivering their paints and supplies.

ABOUT PUAM
The Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) is a mission-driven public art program created by North Shore CDC, a community development non-profit organization founded in Salem, MA in 1978 in the Point neighborhood. The Museum was created to break down the invisible but undeniable socio-economic barrier between the Point and the rest of the city and region. Through stunning world-class art, we wish to improve pride within the neighborhood. What sets PUAM apart is that nearly all of the public art in our program is painted on or adjacent to long-term restricted affordable housing. These homes will remain affordable to generations of families forever.
ABOUT NSCDC
North Shore Community Development Coalition’s mission is to invest in neighborhoods to create thriving communities. Founded in 1978, NSCDC is based in Salem’s Point neighborhood. The Point is our incubator for new projects and programs. It is the place where we have the deepest relationships and the longest history. Many of the programs we offer in Salem serve people from other towns in the Greater Boston/North Shore area. NSCDC seeks to align its real estate investments, programmatic offerings, and advocacy efforts for maximum impact. Its work consists of the following categories:

Invitamos a artistas que viven en Nueva Inglaterra a postularse para una oportunidad remunerada de pintar un mural de 8 x 8 pies bajo el tema RAÍCES | ROOTS (Soy de aquí | I am from here). Invitamos a artistas y residentes a explorar visualmente sus raíces o las raíces de su familia o comunidad. Los participantes podrán reflexionar sobre sus experiencias de vida y también sobre narrativas culturales más amplias relacionadas con la inmigración, el sentido de pertenencia, la identidad y el legado generacional.
Este tema se alinea con la celebración del 400 aniversario de Salem y nos anima a reflexionar sobre las historias entrelazadas de este lugar y su gente. Honra tanto a los habitantes originarios como a quienes han hecho de Salem su hogar a lo largo de generaciones, reconociendo la migración, la resiliencia y la reinvención como partes fundamentales de nuestra historia compartida. CONVOCATORIA PARA ARTISTAS DE NUEVA INGLATERRA 2025
PUAM encargará veinte(20) murales de 8 x 8 pies que serán seleccionados de la siguiente manera:
- Catorce murales (14) creados por artistas que viven en Nueva Inglaterra
- Hasta seis (6) murales creados por artistas residentes en Salem que participen en nuestro Programa Vecino Creativo, con apoyo durante la instalación por parte de dos artistas mentores

Nota: Si bien reconocemos que la historia de las brujas forma parte importante de la identidad de Salem, esta convocatoria abierta invita a los artistas a ir más allá de esa narrativa. Alentamos propuestas que exploren las raíces de las muchas comunidades de Salem, en especial aquellas que históricamente han sido invisibilizadas y que reflejan la riqueza de nuestras historias culturales.
REQUISITOS PARA APLICAR
- Una declaración escrita del artista
- Hasta tres muestras de trabajos relevantes
- Un boceto del mural propuesto
- Debe vivir en Nueva Inglaterra (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT o RI)
- Debe poder entregar un formulario IRS W9
Se requiere que los artistas presenten una propuesta visual o un boceto del mural, junto con una declaración escrita que describa la inspiración detrás de su propuesta, qué los inspiró, cómo surgió la idea o de dónde proviene. La declaración escrita será un elemento clave en el proceso de selección.

¿QUIÉN PUEDE APLICAR?
Cualquier persona de 18 años o más puede aplicar, ya sea de manera individual o en equipos pequeños. Se dará preferencia a residentes actuales o anteriores de la ciudad de Salem y de la región de North Shore. Los artistas deben presentar comprobante legal de residencia en Nueva Inglaterra. Los grupos pueden incluir miembros menores de 18 años, pero deberán contar con un permiso escrito de su madre, padre o tutor legal para participar en la convocatoria.
Nota: Se informa que las personas seleccionadas que necesiten viajar desde largas distancias para llegar a Salem serán responsables de planificar y cubrir sus propios gastos de viaje y hospedaje durante el período de instalación.

¿CUÁL ES EL PAGO PARA ARTISTAS?
Un jurado seleccionará a 20 artistas que recibirán un estipendio de $1,000 para cubrir honorarios artísticos y materiales. Los fondos se distribuirán en dos pagos: $500 al ser seleccionados y $500 restantes al completar el mural.
Los artistas también pueden optar por participar como mentores. Dos mentores seleccionados recibirán $500 adicionales.
NOTA: Los y las artistas son responsables de comprar y entregar sus propias pinturas y materiales

SOBRE PUAM
El Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) es un programa de arte público impulsado por la misión creada por North Shore CDC, una organización de desarrollo comunitario sin fines de lucro fundada en Salem, MA en 1978 en el barrio de Punto. El Museo se creó para romper la invisible pero innegable barrera socioeconómica entre el Punto y el resto de la ciudad y la región. SOBRE NSCDC
