The Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM), founded by North Shore CDC in the Point Neighborhood in Salem, was created to break down the invisible but undeniable socio-economic barrier between The Point Neighborhood, a LatinX community, and the rest of Salem. Through public art, PUAM aims to increase pride of place within the neighborhood and raise consciousness about social justice topics. PUAM’s 2021 call for art wants to provoke deeper conversations with artists and provide a platform to express the constant quest for a better life that individuals and communities of color have and continue to pursue in this country.
Inspired by the ethos of the United States of America, PUAM calls upon all New England-based artists to partake in a paid opportunity to use their creativity, communication and advocacy to develop an interpretation of “The American Dream.” The curation of eighteen (18) murals will be accompanied by nine (9) panels dedicated to selected quotes and relevant educational information both in Spanish and English. PUAM hopes that the visual combination of art and educational content will create an impactful experience for the contributing artists, the community, and visitors of the open air museum.

ABOUT THE CALL FOR ART:
THE SUBMISSION TOPIC: “THE AMERICAN DREAM”
Inspired by the ethos of the United States of America, PUAM calls upon all Massachusetts-based artists to partake in a paid opportunity to use their creativity, communication and advocacy to develop an interpretation of “The American Dream.” Initially rooted in the declaration of independence, which states that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” The “American Dream” has been questioned in recent times by scholars and politicians as a myth rather than a reality.
What is “The American Dream”? Is the American dream still possible? Was it ever possible?
In these polarizing times we live in, PUAM looks to artists to foster dialogue around the cornerstone principles of the U.S. What roles individuals and institutions play in creating a social order in which everyone in the U.S., regardless of their circumstances of birth or position, has the chance to be successful and happy, if they work hard?
ABOUT THE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Why is a written statement important? The written Statement will be a major influence in the judging and art selection process. Artists are required to submit a proposal of the mural and written statement explaining the inspiration behind the submission. (See “The submission Topic” section in the Call for Art). The written statement should answer at least one of the following questions:
- What is your interpretation of the “The American Dream”? Or What is your community’s interpretation of “The American Dream”?
- What is the journey to making “The American Dream” a reality?
- Who is responsible for keeping “The American Dream” alive?

APPLICATION FAQ
WHO CAN APPLY?
Anyone 18 years and older may apply. Either solo or in small teams. A preference will be applied to New England based artists, specifically residents of the North Shore and Essex County. Proof of MA Residence will be required. Groups may have members under the age of 18 but written permission to participate on the call for art shall be given by their legal guardian.
HOW DO ARTIST APPLY?
Artists can submit an application via this Google Survey.
WHAT IS THE AWARD/ ARTIST STIPEND?
A team of judges will select 18 artists who will receive a $1000 stipend for artist fee and supplies. $500 will be paid upfront when selected and the remaining $500 when the mural is completed.
NOTE: Artists are responsible for purchasing and delivery of their own paints and supplies. PUAM has a limited amount of Aerosol Paints available for artists to use for the murals. These will be given away on a first come first serve basis. Please contact Yinette Guzman Yinette@Northshorecdc.og, to schedule a time to pick up paints.
WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS:
- We will prioritize submissions that:
- resonate with The Point neighborhood community. A majority minority, lantinX. community.
- reflect cultural/historic relevance to immigrant, african-american and native-american communities
- includes a detailed and clear written statement that describes the connection between the chosen topic and the sketch.
- We will prioritize artists:
- From The Point Neighborhood, Salem and the North Shore of Massachusetts. ○ From minority backgrounds
- We will not select submissions that:
- are obscene, inflammatory, or inappropriate in anyway
- that fall outside of the listed constraints regarding size, length, and topic

NOTE: Artwork must be completed within the week assigned to each artist, please plan accordingly to accommodate unexpected weather. If additional installation time is needed or required please submit an email requesting additional days to complete your work.
WHERE WILL THE MURALS BE LOCATED?
The murals will be installed in the heart of the Punto Urban Art Museum on a prominent wall at Peabody Street in The Point Neighborhood in Salem. The wall contains twenty-seven 8’X8’ panels, twenty of which will be used to display artist’s murals. Since 2018, PUAM has used this location as an annual rotating gallery to display works of New England based artists.
The Point neighborhood was first designated around 1640, the original “Stage Point” neighborhood consisted mainly of agricultural fields and a small fishing community. The influx of industrial working mills in the early 19th century attracted various immigrant communities consisting of French-Canadians, Irish, Polish, Swedish, and Eastern Europeans looking for opportunities to better their lives. Since the dissolution of the industrial mills in the mid 20th century, many Latin Americans had begun to populate the neighborhood with a large majority of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
In more recent years, the population continues to diversify, creating a welcoming, family-friendly community particularly for new immigrants. The area currently houses all the public artwork commissioned by the Punto Urban Art Museum.
HOW TO INSTALL THE WORK?
Each artist is responsible for purchasing and delivery of their own paint, set-up and clean-up of their designated space each day. All details will be outlined in the acceptance email sent to you. Artists must maintain the highest degree of professionalism prior, during installation time, the use of alcohol and recreational drugs are prohibited while painting in the Point Community. Artists must respect the neighbors’ quiet hours 9 PM-9AM.
WHAT IS THE PAINTING SURFACE?
Concrete wall. Walls will be primed before selected artists’ work commences. Artists are responsible for acquiring their materials and tools.
WHAT ARE ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS?
Aerosol paint and acrylic paint.
ARE THERE ANY ARTWORK RESTRICTIONS?
- Artwork must fill or substantially fill the space provided, which is 8’ in width and 8’ in height. All artwork must remain within the boundaries of your space.
- Artwork mediums not allowed are: wheat paste, paper, mod podge and glue.
- All displayed work must be representative of the images submitted as an entry. If the physical work brought for display does not reflect the jpegs submitted, the work may be rejected and removed.
- All works must adhere to a family and child-friendly environment. Nudity nor anything overtly violent, inappropriate or Halloween-themed will be considered.
- By submitting their proposal, the Artist agrees that their work is original and their own and that their work does not have previous restrictions or limitations placed by other third-party groups that would hinder its publication and marketing use by North Shore CDC.
- Don’t use PUAM or NSCDC logos in your submission or final product.

HOW TO BE SAFE DURING COVID-19?
Artists must follow Salem’s guidance on preventing the spread of Covid-19. Please review the information and keep yourself and fellow artists safe during your participation.
HOW WILL NSCDC HANDLE OWNERSHIP OF THE WORK, PHYSICALLY AND DIGITALLY?
After completion of the murals, all artwork will have a spotlight feature on our Punto Urban Art Museum social media and website. We will include your written statement, bio, portrait and an image of your mural. All murals are temporary and will be up for display 1 or 2 years in the neighborhood. Physical murals will remain on the Peabody Street National Grid Wall, which is owned by NSCDC, artists granted NSCDC limited license to print and distribute the work. Artists hold the right to publish, sell and distribute images of their murals.

North Shore Community Development Coalition’s mission is to invest in neighborhoods to create thriving communities. Founded in 1978, NSCDC is based in Salem’s Point neighborhood. The Point is our incubator for new projects and programs. It is the place where we have the deepest relationships and the longest history. ¿DÓNDE SE UBICARÁN LOS MURALES?
Los murales se instalarán en el corazón del Museo de Arte Urbano el Punto en una pared prominente de la calle Peabody en el barrio el Punto en Salem. ¿CÓMO INSTALAR LA OBRA?
Cada artista es responsable de la compra y entrega de su propia pintura, el montaje y la limpieza de su espacio designado cada día. Los artistas deben mantener el más alto grado de profesionalidad antes de que, durante el tiempo de instalación, se prohíba el uso de alcohol y drogas recreativas mientras pintan en la Comunidad de Point. Los artistas deben respetar las horas de silencio de los vecinos de 9 PM a 9 AM.

¿HAY ALGUNA RESTRICCIÓN PARA LAS OBRAS DE ARTE?
- Las obras de arte deben llenar o rellenar sustancialmente el espacio provisto, que es de 8′ de ancho y 8′ de alto. Todas las obras de arte deben permanecer dentro de los límites de su espacio.
- Los medios de arte no permitidos son: pasta de trigo, papel, podge mod y pegamento.
- Todos los trabajos mostrados deben ser representativos de las imágenes presentadas como una entrada. Si el trabajo físico traído para su exhibición no refleja los jpegs presentados, el trabajo puede ser rechazado y eliminado.
- Todas las obras deben adherirse a un ambiente familiar y de respeto a los niños. No se considerará la desnudez ni nada abiertamente violento, inapropiado o con temática de Halloween.
- Al presentar su propuesta, el Artista acepta que su obra es original y propia y que su trabajo no tiene restricciones o limitaciones previas impuestas por otros grupos de terceros que puedan obstaculizar su publicación y uso comercial por parte de North Shore CDC.
- No uses los símbolos de PUAM o NSCDC en tu presentación o en el producto final.
- No se desvíe de los mensajes principales proporcionados anteriormente

¿CÓMO ESTAR SEGURO DURANTE EL COVID-19?
Los artistas deben seguir las directrices de Salem para evitar la propagación del Covid-19. Por favor, revise la información y manténgase protegido usted y sus compañeros durante su participación.
¿CÓMO MANEJA EL NSCDC LA PROPIEDAD DE LA OBRA, FÍSICA Y DIGITALMENTE?
Una vez terminados los murales, todas las obras de arte tendrán un lugar destacado en nuestra página web y medios sociales del Museo de Arte Urbano el Punto. Incluiremos su declaración escrita, su biografía, su retrato y una imagen de su mural. Todos los murales son temporales y estarán expuestos 1 o 2 años en el barrio. Los murales físicos permanecerán en el muro de la red nacional de la calle Peabody, que es propiedad de NSCDC, los artistas concedieron a NSCDC una licencia limitada para imprimir y distribuir la obra.
