A DREAM CALLED HOME: CALLING ALL NEW ENGLAND-BASED ARTISTS
ABOUT THE CALL
The Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) was founded by North Shore CDC in Salem’s historic Point neighborhood to help break down the invisible but undeniable socio-economic barrier between the Point, a primarily-Latinx community, and the rest of Salem. Through public art, PUAM aims to increase pride of place within the neighborhood and raise consciousness about social justice topics. PUAM’s 2023 Call for Art is inspired by an award-winning Mexican-American author, Reyna Grande. The Call is inspired by the title of the book A Dream Called Home. Reyna’s memoir is about the courage to fulfill the deep desire to have a stable home, a dream she realized by daring to pursue it. By deriving inspiration from Reyna’s memoir, PUAM is providing an opportunity and platform for creatives to share their stories that will reflect and/or connect with the life/home that communities of color continue to pursue in this country.
The 2023 National Grid Call for Art invites New England-based artists to apply for a paid opportunity to paint an 8’x8’ mural using the theme “A Dream Called Home”. We will ask artists and residents to visually explore what makes or challenges the ideals of the place they call home. Participants can draw upon their own experiences or draw inspiration from quotes from Grande’s memoir. The twenty-seven (27) murals will be curated as such:
- Fourteen (14) murals will be dedicated to New England-based artists
- Six (6) murals will be dedicated to Salem El Punto residents and neighbors selected to participate in the Creative Neighbor Program who will receive coaching to create their own mural from concept to installation
- Artists can also apply to be mentors to these 6 residents. Click here for more information.
- Seven (7) educational panels will be dedicated to select quotes that reflect the spirit of the call appearing in both Spanish and English.
This call invites New England-based artists to create a mural that is a visual combination of art and educational content which engenders an impactful experience for each contributing artist, El Punto community, and all visitors of our open-air museum.
SUBMISSION TOPIC: A DREAM CALLED HOME
Reyna Grande’s memoir A Dream Called Home details the author’s journey as a Mexican immigrant finding her voice and home in the United States. Both burdened and uplifted by her cultural experiences, Grande’s beautifully complex upbringing with her friends and family guides her creativity and purpose in life.
Inspired by Grande’s journey, we invite New England-based artists and residents to visually explore what makes or challenges their ideals of the place they call home. Participants can draw upon their own experiences or draw inspiration from quotes from Grande’s memoir. We encourage everyone to read Grande’s story, but artists are not required to read the full book in order to apply to the Call for Art.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Why is a written statement important? The written statement will be a major influence in the judging and art selection process. Artists are required to submit a visual proposal/sketch of the mural and a written statement explaining what/how/where they found inspiration for the submission. The written statement needs to answer at least one of the following prompts:
- Please describe and design a mural that encompasses a dream, wish, or hope for the place you call home?
- Through your mural, answer the following question: what has helped or challenged you and/or your family to feel at home where you are now? You can reference internal experiences or external factors.
- Interpret or use inspiration from one or more of the following quotes from Reyna Grande’s memoir A Dream Called Home through your mural.
- “It was then that I understood what I needed to do. If I could become a turtle and build a home that I could carry on my back, I would never feel homeless again.”
- “You are now bilingual, bicultural, and binational. You are not less. You are more, twice the girl you used to be”
- “I would build my home out of the only things I had–words and dreams.”
- “Being split in half had forced me to create two versions of myself…As with the moon, there is the face that we immigrants show to the world, but our second face is the one we keep hidden in darkness so that no one can see us weeping.“
- “Just because we are ilegales doesn’t mean we cannot dream.”
- “I was afraid of not being able to make this new place feel like a real home, a place where I belonged.”
- “My family fell apart when we immigrated. We sacrificed so much for a shot at the American Dream, and I would be damned if I didn’t make the dream mine.”

ABOUT REYNA GRANDE
Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a young girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Awards finalist. Her other books include the novels A Ballad of Love and Glory, Across a Hundred Mountains, and Dancing with Butterflies, the memoirs The Distance Between Us: Young Readers Edition, and A Dream Called Home. APPLICATION FAQS
WHO CAN APPLY?
Anyone 18 years and older may apply. Either solo or in small teams. A preference will be applied to New England-based artists, specifically residents of the North Shore and Essex County. Proof of address is required for New England-based artists. Groups may have members under the age of 18 but written permission to participate in the Call for Art shall be given by their legal guardian.
Note: Please be advised that applicants needing to travel long distances to Salem are responsible for planning/funding their own travel/accommodations during the installation time.
HOW DO ARTISTS APPLY?
Artists can submit an application via this Google Survey. Applicants will need a Google account to apply. Please reach out to Yinette Guzman at yinette@northshorecdc.org to request application materials. Or you can visit our open house on Saturday, May 13 at Espacio 105 Congress St, Salem MA. On this day, we will provide help filling out the application from 1-5 PM.
WHAT IS THE AWARD/ ARTIST STIPEND?
A team of judges will select 14 artists who will receive a $1000 stipend for artist fees and supplies. Funds will be distributed in two payments, an initial $500 will be paid upfront when selected and the remaining $500 will be provided once the mural is completed.
Artists can apply to become an Artist Mentor to individuals learning to make murals for the first time through the Creative Point Neighbor Program (page 11). Mentors receive an additional $500.
NOTE: Artists are responsible for purchasing and delivery of their own paints and supplies. PUAM has a limited amount of Aerosol Paints available for artists to use for the murals. These will be given away on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please contact Yinette Guzman at Yinette@Northshorecdc.og, to schedule a time to pick up the paints.
WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?
We will prioritize submissions that…
- …resonate with residents of the Point neighborhood, a vibrant, primarily low-income, immigrant/Latinx community.
- …reflect cultural/historic relevance to immigrant, Black, and Native-American communities
- …includes a detailed and clear written statement that describes the connection between the chosen topic and the sketch.
We will prioritize artists…
- …from the Point neighborhood, Salem, and the North Shore of Massachusetts.
- …who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, identify as part of the LGBTQIA, or who have a disability.
We will NOT select submissions that:
- …are obscene, inflammatory, or inappropriate in any way.
- …that fall outside of the listed constraints regarding size, length, and topic.
WHERE WILL THE MURALS BE LOCATED?
The murals will be installed in the heart of the Punto Urban Art Museum on a prominent wall at Peabody Street in the Point neighborhood in Salem. The wall contains twenty-seven (27) 8’X8’ panels, twenty (20) of which will be used to display artists’ murals. Since 2018, PUAM has used this location as an annual rotating gallery to display works of New England-based artists.
The Point neighborhood was first designated around 1640, the original “Stage Point” neighborhood consisted mainly of agricultural fields and a small fishing community. The influx of industrial working mills in the early 19th century attracted various immigrant communities consisting of French-Canadians, Irish, Polish, Swedish, and Eastern Europeans looking for opportunities to better their lives. Since the dissolution of the industrial mills in the mid-20th century, many Latin Americans had begun to populate the neighborhood with a large majority of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
In more recent years, the population continues to diversify, creating a welcoming, family-friendly community, particularly for new immigrants. The area currently houses nearly all the public artwork commissioned by the Punto Urban Art Museum. Murals are also located in Gloucester and Boston.
HOW TO INSTALL THE WORK?
Each artist is responsible for purchasing and delivering their own paint, and setting up and cleaning up their designated space each day. All details will be outlined in the acceptance email sent to the selected artists. Artists must maintain the highest degree of professionalism prior to installation time, the use of alcohol and recreational drugs are prohibited while painting in the Point. Artists must respect the neighbors’ quiet hours from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM.
WHAT IS THE PAINTING SURFACE?
Concrete wall. Walls will be primed before selected artists’ work commences. Artists are responsible for acquiring their materials and tools.
WHAT ARE ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS?
Aerosol paint and acrylic/latex paint. Individuals participating in the Creative Point Neighbor Program can only use acrylic paint.
ARE THERE ANY ARTWORK RESTRICTIONS?
- Artwork must fill or substantially fill the space provided, which is 8 feet in width and 8 feet in height. All artwork must remain within the boundaries of your space.
- Artwork mediums not allowed are wheat paste, paper, mod podge, and glue.
- All displayed work must represent the images submitted as an entry. If the physical work brought for display does not reflect the jpegs submitted, the work may be rejected and removed.
- All works must adhere to a family and child-friendly environment. Nudity nor anything overtly violent or inappropriate will be considered.
- By submitting their proposal, the Artist agrees that their work is original and their own and that their work does not have previous restrictions or limitations placed by other third-party groups that would hinder its publication and marketing use by North Shore CDC.
- Don’t use PUAM or NSCDC logos in your submission or final product.
- Don’t deviate from the key messages provided above.

SOBRE AL LLAMADO
El Museo de Arte Urbano Punto (PUAM) fue fundado por North Shore CDC en el histórico vecindario El Punto de Salem para ayudar a romper la barrera socioeconómica invisible pero innegable en El Punto, una comunidad principalmente latina, y el resto de Salem. A través del arte público, PUAM tiene como objetivo aumentar el orgullo de este vecindario y crear conciencia sobre temas de justicia social. La convocatoria de arte 2023 de PUAM está inspirada en una autora mexicana-estadounidense galardonada, Reyna Grande. El llamado está inspirado en el título del libro La Busqueda de un Sueño. El libro de Reyna trata sobre el coraje que ella tuvo para cumplir el profundo deseo de tener un hogar estable, un sueño que realizó al atreverse a perseguirlo. Al inspirarse en las memorias del libro de Reyna, PUAM brinda una oportunidad y una plataforma para que las personas compartan sus historias que reflejarán y/o se conectarán con la vida/el hogar que las comunidades de color continúan buscando en este país.

Tanto agobiada como animada por sus experiencias culturales, la crianza bellamente compleja de Grande con sus amigos y familiares guía su creatividad y propósito en la vida.
Inspirándose en la experiencias de Reyna Grande, invitamos a los artistas y vecinos de Nueva Inglaterra a explorar visualmente qué hace o desafía sus ideales del lugar al que llaman hogar. Los participantes pueden basarse en sus propias experiencias o inspirarse en textos del el libro de Grande. Sugerimos a todos a leer la historia de Grande, pero los artistas no están obligados a leer el libro para participar en el llamado de Artistas.
REQUERIMIENTOS DE LA APLICACIÓN
¿Por qué es importante una explicación escrita? La declaración escrita tendrá una gran influencia en el proceso de evaluación y selección de artistas. Los artistas deben enviar una propuesta visual (dibujo) del mural y una explicación escrita sobre qué/cómo/dónde encontraron inspiración para la presentación. La explicación escrita debe responder al menos a una de las siguientes indicaciones:
- Describa y dibuje un mural que abarque un sueño, deseo o esperanza para el lugar al que llamas hogar.
- A través de tu mural, responde la siguiente pregunta: ¿qué te ha ayudado o a desafiado a ti y/o a tu familia a sentirse como en casa donde estás ahora? Puede hacer referencia a experiencias internas o factores externos.
- Intérprete o inspírese en una o más de las siguientes citas de el libro de Reyna Grande Un La Busqueda de un Sueño a través de su mural.
- “Fue entonces cuando entendí lo que tenía que hacer. Si pudiera convertirme en una tortuga y construir una casa que pudiera cargar sobre mi espalda, nunca más me sentiría sin hogar.”
- “Ahora eres bilingüe, bicultural y binacional. no eres menos. Eres más, el doble de la chica que solías ser.”
- “Construire mi casa con las únicas cosas que tengo: palabras y sueños.”
- “Estar partido por la mitad me había obligado a crear dos versiones de mí mismo… Al igual que la luna, está el rostro que los inmigrantes mostramos al mundo, pero nuestro segundo rostro es el que mantenemos escondido en la oscuridad para que nadie pueda vernos llorar.”

- …incluye una descripcion escrita clara y detallada que describa la conexión entre el tema elegido y el dibujo/propuesta.
Priorizaremos a los artistas…
- …que vivan en el Punto, Salem y la costa norte de Massachusetts.
- …que son negros, indígenas y personas de color, se identifican como parte de LGBTQIA o tienen una discapacidad.
NO seleccionaremos aplicaciones que:
- …son obscenos, incendiarios o inapropiados de alguna manera.
- …que quedan fuera de las restricciones enumeradas con respecto al tamaño, la extensión y el tema.
¿DÓNDE ESTARÁN SITUADOS LOS MURALES?
Los murales se instalarán en el corazón del Museo de Arte Urbano Punto en una pared en la calle Peabody en el vecindario el Punto en Salem. La pared contiene veintisiete (27) paneles de 8’X8′, veinte (20) de los cuales se utilizarán para exhibir murales de artistas. Desde 2018, PUAM ha utilizado este lugar como una galería cotemporaria bi-annual para exhibir trabajo de artistas de Nueva Inglaterra.
El vecindario del Punto se designó por primera vez alrededor de 1640, el vecindario original era llamado “Stage Point” consistía principalmente en campos agrícolas y una pequeña comunidad pesquera. La afluencia de molinos industriales en funcionamiento a principios del siglo XIX atrajo a varias comunidades de inmigrantes compuestas por Francocanadienses, Irlandeses, Polacos, Suecos y Europeos del este que buscaban oportunidades para mejorar sus vidas. Desde la disolución de los molinos industriales a mediados del siglo XX, muchos Latinoamericanos habían comenzado a poblar el barrio con una gran mayoría de inmigrantes de República Dominicana y Puerto Rico.
En años más recientes, la población continúa diversificándose, creando una comunidad acogedora y familiar, particularmente para los nuevos inmigrantes. Actualmente, el área alberga casi todas las obras de arte público desarroyadas por el Museo de Arte Urbano del Punto. Los murales también se encuentran en Gloucester y Boston.
¿CÓMO INSTALAR EL MURAL?
Cada artista es responsable de ordenar y comprar su propia pintura, y de preparar y limpiar su espacio designado todos los días. Todos los detalles seran enviados en el correo electrónico de aceptación enviado a los artistas seleccionados. Los artistas deben mantener el más alto grado de profesionalismo durante el tiempo de instalación, el uso de alcohol y drogas recreativas están prohibido mientras pintan en el Punto. Los artistas deben respetar el horario de tranquilidad y silencio de los vecinos desde las 9 PM a 9 AM.
¿CUAL ES LA SUPERFICIE DE PARED?
Pared es de concreto. Las paredes se cubiertas con primer blanco antes de que comience el trabajo de los artistas seleccionados. Los artistas son responsables de adquirir sus materiales y herramientas.
¿CUÁLES SON LOS MATERIALES ACEPTABLES?
Pintura en aerosol y pintura acrílica/látex. Las personas que participan en el Vecinos Creativos de el Punto pueden usar pintura acrílica.
¿HAY ALGUNA RESTRICCIÓN PARA EL MURAL?
- La obra de arte debe llenar o llenar sustancialmente el espacio proporcionado, que es de 8 pies de ancho y 8 pies de alto. Todas los murales deben permanecer dentro de los límites de su espacio.
- Los medios artísticos no permitidos son pasta de trigo, papel, mod podge y pegamento.
- Todo el trabajo exhibido debe representar las imágenes enviadas como entrada. Si el trabajo físico presentado para exhibición no refleja los jpegs enviados, el trabajo puede ser rechazado y eliminado.

- No use los logos de PUAM o NSCDC en su aplicación o producto final.
- No se desvíe de las instrucciones y reglas proveídas anteriormente.

SOBRE PUAM
El Museo de Arte Urbano Punto (PUAM) es un programa de arte público impulsado por la misión creada por North Shore CDC, una organización de desarrollo comunitario sin fines de lucro fundada en Salem, MA en 1978 en el barrio de Punto. El Museo se creó para romper la invisible pero innegable barrera socioeconómica entre el Punto y el resto de la ciudad y la región. A través de un arte impresionante de nivel mundial, deseamos mejorar el orgullo dentro del barrio. SOBRE NSCDC
La misión de la North Shore CDC (NSCDC) es invertir en los barrios para crear comunidades prósperas. Fundado en 1978, el NSCDC tiene su sede en el barrio del Punto de Salem. El Punto es nuestra incubadora de nuevos proyectos y programas. Es el lugar donde tenemos las relaciones más profundas y la historia más larga. También es nuestro terreno de pruebas para las iniciativas que luego aplicamos en otras comunidades. Muchos de los programas que ofrecemos en Salem sirven a personas de otras ciudades de la zona de Boston/North Shore.
El NSCDC trata de alinear sus inversiones inmobiliarias, sus ofertas programáticas y sus esfuerzos de promoción para lograr el máximo impacto. Su trabajo consiste en las siguientes categorías:
- Desarrollo de viviendas asequibles
- Construcción Comunitaria
- Desarrollo de los jóvenes
- Artes y Creación de Espacios
- Asistencia Técnica a la Pequeña Empresa
- Servicios de residentes
